Free bulky waste collection in Maastricht

Updated 14 August 2026 · 1 min read

Do you live in Maastricht on a low income, or do you have a Wmo indication? Then the council collects up to 2 cubic metres of bulky waste free of charge once a year. Here is how to arrange it.

An old sofa, a broken cupboard or a mattress: bulky waste does not fit in the residual waste bag, and not everyone can drive it to the recycling centre themselves. Since 1 July 2026 the council collects bulky waste free of charge from residents on a low income or with a Wmo indication.

Note: this is a trial. The scheme runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Who is it for?

You qualify if you live in the municipality of Maastricht and have a low income, a Wmo indication, or both. Age is not a condition. That surprises many people: it is not about being over 65, but about what you have to live on.

For a single person below pension age the income threshold in 2026 was around € 1,483 net per month. If you are close to that, simply apply — trying costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Age does not come into it. The scheme looks at your income and at any Wmo indication. Someone on a state pension with a small additional pension often does qualify, but that depends on the amount.

You pay the standard rate for collection at your door, or you take it to a recycling centre yourself. With a valid environmental pass you can use those.

The council rings you within ten working days to arrange an appointment. You need to be at home when it is collected, because you sign for it.
