Housing and neighbourhoods
Affordable housing
A first home is almost unaffordable in Maastricht. SAB wants starter homes up to € 290,000. Multi-generational and carer housing should also become easier.
What is going on
Young people from Maastricht who want to stay in their own city cannot find an affordable home. First-time buyers compete with investors and with buyers from outside, and new construction mostly targets the expensive end. The result: people who grew up here move to Meerssen, Eijsden or across the border, and the neighbourhoods age.
At the same time parents and children want to help each other more often, with a parent living with the children or a child living in the parents’ garden. In Maastricht such multi-generational and carer housing still runs into rules and permits far too often.
What SAB wants
- Starter homes up to € 290,000, with priority for people who live or work in Maastricht.
- An owner-occupancy requirement for new homes at the cheaper end, so starter homes do not end up with investors.
- Multi-generational and carer housing allowed as standard, with a simple permit.
- Building in and near the neighbourhoods, not just in the centre, so every area keeps young and old.
What you can do now
Is your plan for a carer’s annex or splitting a home stuck at the city? Tell SAB’s help desk. We look at the application with you and take it to the council if the rules are in the way. That is also how we learn where things go wrong in practice.
Why we take this position
“We stand for fair housing in Maastricht. No priority for refugees with a residence permit — everyone waits their turn. Everyone deserves a chance at a home. Our children, our students and our elderly.”
