Clean and safe

Safety in the neighbourhood

Nuisance makes neighbourhoods unsafe and reports are left too long. SAB wants more enforcement officers who know the area and quicker action. And you should hear what happens with your report.

What is going on

Residents of Maastricht do report nuisance, but often hear nothing afterwards: a broken streetlight, youngsters on the same corner every evening, dealers at a shopping centre. A report that vanishes into a system costs effort and yields nothing. Next time nobody reports it, and then it looks as if nothing is wrong.

Enforcement officers who know the neighbourhood make the difference. They know which corner has been a problem for months and who belongs there. In many Maastricht neighbourhoods those officers are not visible enough, and police, city and enforcement work past each other.

What SAB wants

  • More enforcement officers permanently assigned to a neighbourhood and approachable on the street.
  • Every report gets feedback: what was done, and when.
  • Recurring trouble spots tackled with police and prosecutors together, as SAB asked for with the drug dealing in Belfort and Boschpoort.
  • Lighting, greenery and pavements in good order: a well-kept street feels safer and is safer.

What you can do now

In immediate danger call 112. For the police without urgency call 0900-8844; to report anonymously use Meld Misdaad Anoniem on 0800-7000. Nuisance in public space goes to the city on 14 043 or through the BuitenBeter app. A loose paving stone, fly-tipping or a broken playground you report to SAB’s reporting point: we pass it on and get back to you. The guide on reporting nuisance lists every desk.

Why we take this position

“In Maastricht everyone should be able to walk the streets safely, in the evening too. And enforcement needs to be firm.”
