Tourism and parking
At the weekend the city is packed while midweek there is room to spare. SAB wants that pressure spread more evenly and a parking policy that works for residents and visitors alike. Staying welcoming to those who come to Maastricht, without our own neighbourhoods grinding to a halt.
What is going on
Maastricht lives off its visitors: the shops, the bars and restaurants and the events need them. But the pressure is unevenly spread. On Saturdays and Sundays the city centre and the neighbourhoods around it are full, with drivers circling streets where residents can no longer park their own car. Midweek there is room to spare in the car parks and on the street.
Residents of the centre and of neighbourhoods such as Wyck, Jekerkwartier and Sint Pieter pay the price in nuisance, while parking policy mainly looks at the visitor. Staying welcoming and keeping your own neighbourhood liveable need not be a contradiction, if the city steers.
What SAB wants
- Visitors spread across the week and across the city: midweek promotions, events outside the centre, clear signage to car parks on the edge.
- Priority for residents in their own street, with permit parking that works on Saturdays too.
- Parking rates that keep circling traffic out of the neighbourhoods instead of steering it in.
- Residents involved in advance in events and traffic measures in their area.
What you can do now
Do you have structural parking nuisance from visitors in your street, or is your parking permit application stuck? Tell SAB’s help desk. We collect those reports per neighbourhood and take them to the city council.
Why we take this position
“Every year thousands of tourists visit our city. At the weekend it is packed, while midweek there is still room. We stand for a fair spread, a fair parking policy, and treating the people who come here well. Maastricht is worth it.”
