Clean and safe
Waste and the red bag
Waste is now collected only once every two weeks and the red bag is under threat. SAB wants weekly collections back and the red bag kept. A clean street starts with proper collection.
What is going on
Residual waste in Maastricht is now collected only once every two weeks, in the red bag you pay for per bag. Those who sort well pay less. The city wants to phase out the red bag and switch to wheelie bins. For people in small homes, in flats or with limited mobility, a bin is exactly the problem: where do you keep it, and how do you get it to the kerb?
Meanwhile residents see the effect of less frequent collections in the street: full bags next to the recycling points, bulky waste left standing because taking it away is beyond many older people, and more fly-tipping in the neighbourhood.
What SAB wants
- Back to weekly collection of residual waste, at least in summer and in densely built neighbourhoods.
- The red bag kept for anyone with no room for a bin.
- Free bulky waste collection for over-65s, so it does not end up next to the recycling point.
- Recurring dumping spots tackled with more frequent emptying, an extra container or supervision.
What you can do now
Your collection day is in the city’s waste calendar or the Milieu App. Put the bag out on the day itself, before 7.30 am. Waste next to a container or a dump in your street? Report it through SAB’s fly-tipping reporting point: we pass it on to the city and let you know when it is gone. The guide on waste in Maastricht has all the practical details.
Why we take this position
“We are SAB and we want a sound waste policy. Bin bags collected once a week. Not once every two weeks. That is what we stand for.”
