Bike racks at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein removed for weeks
From 2 to 20 November the city replaces the bike racks at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. A temporary parking spot is set up at Boompjes.
The municipality of Maastricht (gemeente) is replacing the bike racks at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, next to the basilica. The work runs from Monday 2 November to Friday 20 November. During this period the bike parking area at the square is closed.
What is happening?
The current fixed bike racks are being replaced with new ones. These new racks can be temporarily removed. This makes it easier to quickly and safely clear the square during busy events, such as carnival.
The municipality is also redoing the pavement around the bike racks. In some spots the paving stones are currently uneven, because tree roots push them up. After the work, the square will be flatter and easier to walk on.
What does this mean for you?
If you normally use the bike parking at the basilica, you cannot use it during the works. Here is what changes for you:
- You can park your bike at the temporary bike parking at Boompjes, on the north side, close to the Hoge Brug (High Bridge).
- Signs at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein will point you to this temporary parking spot.
- The work area on the square is fenced off.
- If you are walking, you can still pass by using the pedestrian crossings.
- The road for cars mostly stays open. Only when work takes place on the road itself, temporary fences will be placed there.
Good to know
More details about the works are available on the website of the municipality of Maastricht, in the announcement about the new bike racks at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein.
