The public cemetery on Tongerseweg in Maastricht is closed for the time being. During a recent autumn storm, several trees fell on the grounds. Some of them landed on graves.

What is happening?

The cemetery has more than a thousand trees, some of them large and old. The storm damaged a number of graves. A notice has been placed at the entrance gates stating that the cemetery is closed because of fallen trees. Visitors who still came, some with flowers or cleaning supplies, were unable to enter. A few could look over the fence to check whether their loved one’s grave was undamaged. The municipality of Maastricht says fallen trees, loose branches and unsafe spots are being dealt with. Relatives of people whose graves were damaged will be contacted personally by the municipality.

What does this mean for you?

If you have a loved one buried at the Tongerseweg cemetery, keep the following in mind:

  • The cemetery is closed to visitors for now.
  • If a grave is damaged, the municipality will contact the relatives directly.
  • You cannot check the condition of a specific grave yourself while the cemetery is closed.
  • Watch for updates from the municipality about when it will reopen.
