Bridge maintenance in Maastricht delayed due to funding cuts

The Dutch government has set aside 18 billion euros for maintenance of roads, bridges, railways and waterworks across the Netherlands. That is far less than the 80 billion euros needed. For Limburg, this means many planned maintenance projects are being postponed, including some near Maastricht.

What is happening?

Minister Vincent Karremans of Infrastructure and Water Management announced how much money will go to infrastructure maintenance over the next eight years. Many roads, bridges and locks in the Netherlands are old and need replacement. Because there is less money available than needed, choices are being made. Safety and keeping existing infrastructure usable come first. This means many new projects and maintenance jobs are being delayed or cancelled.

In Limburg, money will go to the bridge in Roosteren over the Julianakanaal and to the Zaarderheiken junction near Venlo. But much other maintenance in the region is being postponed. This includes work near the Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel in Maastricht. Maintenance on the Wilhelminabrug and the Sint Servaasbrug in Maastricht is also on the list of postponed work for 2027, along with work along the Maas riverbanks and at weirs and bridges further along the river, such as in Maasbracht, Stein and Geulle.

What does this mean for you?

This delay could affect how easy it is to travel around Maastricht, although no specific Maastricht projects have a confirmed date yet.

  • If you regularly use the Wilhelminabrug, the Sint Servaasbrug or the Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel, be aware that planned maintenance may come later than expected.
  • For now, nothing changes at these locations.
  • Rijkswaterstaat (the national roads and water authority) will keep carrying out extra inspections to ensure safety, even while major maintenance is delayed.
