Maastricht’s Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel closed two weekends
The tunnel will partially close for one weekend in October and one in November for maintenance. Plan your trips accordingly.
The Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel in Maastricht will partially close on two weekends. Rijkswaterstaat, the national roads authority, is carrying out maintenance. This will happen on one weekend in October and one in November.
What is happening?
The N2 tunnel tubes will be closed from Friday 23 October, 9pm, until Monday 26 October, 6am. The A2 tunnel tubes will be closed from Friday 13 November, 9pm, until Monday 16 November, 6am. During these weekends, safety features and escape routes in the tunnel will be checked, including pictogram signs, lighting near emergency exits, emergency phone cabinets and the foam fire suppression system. Parts will be replaced where needed. In the A2 tunnel, the heat-resistant panelling will also be checked and replaced if necessary.
Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out other maintenance in the region during the same period. The A76 between Kerensheide and Nuth will be closed from Friday 2 October, 9pm, until Monday 5 October, 5am. The A79 between Hulsberg and the Kruisdonk junction will be closed from Friday 16 October, 9pm, until Monday 19 October, 5am. For the widening of the A2, the entire stretch between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide will be closed from Thursday evening 8 October until Monday morning 12 October, 5am.
What does this mean for you?
If you normally drive through the Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel, it is a good idea to plan a different route during these weekends. This applies especially to:
- Drivers using the N2 tunnel on the weekend of 23 to 26 October
- Drivers using the A2 tunnel on the weekend of 13 to 16 November
- Travellers using the A76 or A79, or the Het Vonderen-Kerensheide stretch of the A2, during the same periods
Allow extra travel time or choose an alternative route if you need to travel during these weekends.
