Residents, associations and organisations in Maastricht have jointly submitted 83 projects for the Citizens’ Budget 2026. That is the same number as last year. The municipality is now reviewing which plans are suitable for a resident vote.

What is happening?

The Citizens’ Budget, known locally as the Burgerbegroting, is money that the municipality of Maastricht sets aside for ideas from residents themselves. Over the past period, anyone could submit a plan for their own neighbourhood or for the city as a whole. This year 83 such ideas came in. They cover a wide range of topics, such as liveability in neighbourhoods, bringing neighbours together, and small improvements to public spaces. The municipality is now assessing whether the submitted projects are feasible. After that, a voting round will follow in which residents of Maastricht can choose which projects receive funding and get carried out.

What does this mean for you?

As a resident of Maastricht, you will soon get the chance to help decide which of these 83 ideas move forward. Here is how it works:

  • The municipality first checks whether the submitted plans can actually be carried out.
  • After that, a vote takes place in which residents can indicate their preference.
  • The projects with the most votes receive budget from the Citizens’ Budget and are carried out.

If you submitted a plan yourself, the municipality will let you know whether your project moves forward to the voting round. If you did not submit anything, you will still be able to influence what happens in your neighbourhood or in the city as a voter.
